Not You
by Jennifer Lommers
Out of the corner
A chance glance
Quickly I approach
Hopeful
Excited
Another peek
I see
I am Mistaken
I see
What I should already know
It’s not you
It’s never you
I want it to be you
I imagine your might
And determined focus
Regal and still
But now
I see
The same shape
Of wires
And knobs
Next to the telephone pole
That I saw before
Shamelessly deceiving me
Once again
Shoulders shrug
I drive on
And soon forget
The disappointment
Of not seeing you
Again.
Welcome to my first audio file - a recording of a poem inspired by what I found to be a little amusing moment in time in my daily life. I hope to continue adding such audio files with more poems as well as readings about my art in an effort to be more inclusive of all who enjoy and appreciate art. Each reading will begin with a basic description of the art (if visual art is a part of the inspiration) and then continue with a reading of the text, with an explanation following when appropriate.
This particular poem was created after being tricked by the shape I saw on a telephone pole. I have driven by the same location many times - every time, me thinking a big beautiful hawk was perched above when in reality it was just a clump of wires.
An audio recording of me reading the poem is attached.
Thanks for joining me and I hope you enjoy this reading of “Not You”.
Sincerely,
Jennifer
