I have little to say this week other than sharing what is being reported by others, with this short roundup of articles from the art world for your consideration including perspectives on recent world news, new-to-me art and artist, AI news, and finally - an exhibit about one of my favorite childhood authors (who is also an artist), Tove Jannson.
October 19: ArtNews Reported on “An Open Letter to Arts Organisations” (available on e-flux.com), which was also posted on Artforum.com with this short response posted on October 20.
October 21: ArtNews followed up with an article including a “Response to Open Letter” (available on Instagram @erev_rav_art_magazine)
Today, October 23: Katy Hessel pens this article in The Guardian: “In This Neverending News Cycle of Violence Art Speaks to Our Shared Humanity”.
Hessel finishes her article with these poignant words.
Artists look at the world from within, drawing on real, human experiences. They take us to places we have never been to before, but that we recognise instantly. They teach us about basic emotions that headlines can’t touch. They make individual suffering universal. But they can also provide a lesson for those in power, showing how their actions affect communities, cause trauma down the generations, and harm those who have done nothing wrong. Art, no matter when it was made, can teach us that violence is never the answer.
October 18: Hyperallergic showcases the work of an Iranian artist with the article “The Self-Liberation of Arghavan Khosravi”.
October 19: Hyperallergic reported on a fascinating new use for AI in “Student Uses AI to Read Ancient Scroll”.
October 18: CNN reports on a Paris exhibit spotlighting one of my favorite children’s book authors, Tove Jansson, creator of the beloved Moomins, and yet, as the article shares, so much more. (If my travel budget wasn’t empty right now, I would definitely jump on a plane right now to go see this exhibit.) For more about the artist and exhibit, visit ToveJansson.com - the show closes October 29.
In the words of Moominmamma, from the book Moominpappa at Sea
But one needs a change sometimes. We take everything too much for granted, including each other.
To finding our shared humanity on the path ahead,
Jennifer
